Coming in 2009: 4-H Move Across Missouri

University of Missouri Extension  and 4-H is promoting a new physical activity program starting in 2009! 4-H Move Across Missouri encourages young people to engage in physical activities they enjoy, such as walking, biking, running, swimming, dancing, gardening, taekwondo and more.

Using an online system, MU Extension 4-H members can log the amount of time they spend being active each day and watch their progress throughout the year.  They can even start a friendly competition to see who can log the most active minutes!  MU Extension 4-H members can enroll in the online MAM program as individuals or as part of a team, consisting of family or members of a 4-H club or group.  There will be a Regional Energizer upcoming, more information will be coming soon, so dig out those tennis shoes and start stretching!

Changes made to 4-H Food Quality Assurance Policy

University of Missouri Extension 4-H is making changes to its Food Quality Assurance Policy.  Since 2007, members showing swine are required to have a current card in either Youth Pork Quality Assurance or Missouri Show Me Quality Assurance. Swine project members should be prepared to present their card at Missouri State Fair swine check-in. Local requirements are available from the MU Extension office in Clinton or Daviess County. Starting in 2008, all 4-H members enrolled in food animal projects ― including beef, sheep, swine, dairy cattle, meat and dairy goats, rabbits and poultry ― must complete Missouri

Show Me Quality Assurance certification to be considered a 4-H member in good standing.

National News

The Collegiate 4-H Organization has recently published their new website:     http://www.collegiate4h.org

Collegiate 4-H offers college students an experience after high school of volunteering with 4-H youth, serving their communities, and growing as a young 4-H volunteer leader. Collegiate 4-H is a nationwide program that can be implemented at any college campus. Our website helps in providing resources in starting or finding a Collegiate 4-H club at any school (in any state!) and providing ideas for providing leadership to county, local, and state 4-H programs

4-H Pen Pals

4-H members can have a pen pal from another country or across the United States with World Pen Pals. World Pen Pals has been encouraging international friendship and cultural understanding since its founding in 1950 at the University of Minnesota.

Over one million friends later, the world’s population has doubled and the need for understanding is greater. Students wishing to correspond in English with a new friend abroad may request an application by mail, internet, phone or fax to: World Pen Pals, PO Box 337, Saugerties, NY 12477;

http://www.world-pen-pals.com; phone/fax (845) 246-7828.

What a neat opportunity!!

If anyone makes a pen pal friend, we’d love to hear about it and maybe publish some of your fun things you learn!

Shooting Sports

Taking Aim at Youth Development

Development of skills within the discipline of shooting and "life skills" is implicit in the program curriculum and explicitly stated for volunteers. It appeals to young people and volunteers from a wide range of urban and rural backgrounds. 4-H Shooting Sports promotes positive youth-adult interaction and peer leadership.

The focus of the Missouri 4-H Shooting Sports program shall be the total development of the young person. The shooting sports and related natural resource activities will be utilized as a vehicle for human growth and development. The Shooting Sports program will be used to attract new audiences and/or to enhance the traditional 4-H club program.

As with all Missouri 4-H projects, Shooting Sports is open to any youth from ages of 8 through 18.
