Elementary School Youth


Exploring the Food Pyramid with Professor Popcorn
is available in two levels. There are seven lessons in each level. Lesson one introduces the Food Pyramid, lessons 2-6 each focus on a different food group, and lesson seven centers on the tip of the Pyramid. The lessons encourage children to make healthy choices and become more aware of the importance of exercise. There are many activities, games, and snack preparations included in the lessons.

Level One - grades 1-3
  1. Exploring the Food Pyramid with Professor Popcorn - Why we eat what we do, introduce pyramid, plant and animal food sources, and hand washing.
  2. Go for the Grain! - Grain group, serving sizes, sugar in cereal, exercise and pulse rate.
  3. Eat 3 Every Day! - Vegetable group, keeping food safe, prepare vegetable snack.
  4. Going Bananas Over Fruit! - Fruit group, sometimes and anytime snacks, food storage, fruit snack using a can opener.
  5. Milk Calcium for All It's Worth! - Milk group, calcium for strong bones, chicken bone in vinegar experiment, label reading, food safety.
  6. Muscles Need Meat - Meat group, beef or pork?, fat in foods, fast foods, Tic Tac Toe game.
  7. The Final Tip: Easy Does It! - The "other" food group, smart food choices, using less salt, popcorn snack.

Level Two - grades 4-6
  1. Exploring the Food Pyramid with Professor Popcorn - Introduce pyramid, food classification, serving size, one day food recall, hand washing.
  2. Go for the Grain! - Grain group, carbohydrates, starch experiment, nutritious breakfasts, exercise and pulse rate.
  3. Dip 'em, Dunk 'em . . eat 3 every day! - Vegetable group, calories, preparation and serving methods to reduce fat and calories, vegetable snack.
  4. Going Bananas Over Fruit! - Fruit group, RDA's, pop and fruit drinks, sugar in pop, use of can openers.
  5. Milk Calcium for All It's Worth! - Milk group, calcium and bones, chicken bones/vinegar experiment, label reading, food safety.
  6. Build Muscles with Meats and Proteins - Meat group, protein, fat in foods, experiment, fast foods, Tic Tac Toe game.
  7. The Final Tip: Easy Does It! - The "other" food group, smart food choices, choosing less salt, popcorn snack.
