Successful Marriages

Most people enter into marriage with a degree of commitment, believing their marriage will last forever. Yet 50% or more of all marriages are ending. My good colleague, Susan Mitchell reports researchers are studying successful marriages hoping to find some answers.

Studies and surveys reveal that the following qualities and characteristics are usually found in strong successful marriages:

  • Ability to resolve conflict. Conflict is inevitable within the walls of marriage. Resolving conflict takes excellent communication and negotiating skills. Successful couples anticipate periods of frustration, resentment and anger.

  • Flexibility and willingness to compromise, to tolerate each other’s moods, differences and short comings.

  • Respect, consideration and tolerance. Successful partners do not impose their beliefs or feelings on each other and consider the other’s feelings as much as their own.
