Helping People in Need
Want to know some really practical ways to help someone going through a long illness or who has just lost a loved one?
Here are some hints from people who have been there:
- Dont avoid me
- be the friend or loved one youve always been.- Touch me
- a simple squeeze of the hand can tell me you care.- Call me to say you are bringing our favorite dish
- and what time you are coming.Bring food in disposable containers so theres no worry about returns.- Take care of my children for me.
I need a little time to be alone or with my loved one.- Weep with me when I weep; laugh with me when I laugh.
Dont be afraid to share feelings with me.- Call for my shopping list
and make a "special delivery? to my home.- Dont be afraid to visit but please call first. Sometimes we are lonely.
- Talk to me about the future...
tomorrow, next week, next year. Hope is so important to me.Source: Just Call (1998/99, Winter Vol. III). p. 13.
