Keep your desk from messing with your mind

Time shifting is all about changing your attitude about time. If your real problem is plain old disorganization, try these classic tips to keep your desk from messing with your head:

Log your activities for a few days. Write down each thing you do and how much time you spend doing it. This will identify your time wasters.

Make a plan. Craft a template of the ideal schedule. Assign activities you do every day to particular time slots and leave out your time wasters.

Do the biggest tasks first. Instead of checking e-mail, reading the paper or talking to a colleague slate your most pressing task for first thing in the morning. Then catch up on the details.

Clean your desk. Piles of work are distracting so keep your desk clear of everything but what you’re working on.

And learn to say no. If you have trouble doing this, count to ten or take a short break before you commit yourself.
