Pillars of Character

What makes some adults return a wallet they find, while others keep the money and throw the wallet away? Some children treat elders with respect, while others refuse to visit a grandparent who is ill. Why do some people forgive and others hold a grudge? Adults and children act the way they do based on character. The Josephson Institute says there are "pillars " of character that every person needs. Fairness means not showing favoritism and making things as equal as possible for everyone. Caring comes from the heart and means giving to others and helping one another. It can also mean forgiving someone when they have done wrong - or giving a gift to someone in need without them asking for it. Citizenship means to stay informed on what is happening in the world, along with voting, paying taxes serving on juries, cleaning up the environment. Character helps guide the choices we all make.
