Checking Accounts for Minors
Question: My 16 yr old daughter gets paid by check for babysitting. I would like to educate her about real checking accounts by opening one for her but the banks I have called wont issue one to minors.
Answer: Banks have no uniform policy when it comes to accounts for minors. Some banks will open accounts for minors with two pieces of identification, others may consider a joint account with a parent. In that case, many will print only the childs name on the checks and consult the parent if something happens. Start locally, with your own bank, which may be willing to accommodate a good customer. The closest thing to a nationally available checking account for kids is offered by Young Americans Bank in Denver where all the customers are under age 22. Consider though, if an out of state check is readily accepted in your area. Those with experience writing checks before they go off to college are far ahead of their peers.
