When to Apply for College Financial Aid

If you’re a parent of a high school junior or senior planning on going to college, the time to complete financial aid forms is now. Timing is crucial and planning can save you thousands of dollars. Marc Eisenson, editor of Invest in Yourself says "getting those financial aid packets mailed out early in the new year is perfect. Delay and the pot of financial aid gold may be empty, which will dramatically increase your cost or your kid’s debt load."

You can get the Free Applications for Federal Student Aid form (FAFSA’s) from your child’s high school, college financial aid offices and many libraries. (You can call 1-800-433-3243 for a copy or go on line at www.ed.gov/offices/OPE/express.html.)

Consumer experts say the quickest way to file the form via the internet, where you have the extra advantage of being prompted if something isn’t filled out correctly.
