College Savings Programs
State by state, a savings opportunity is quietly emerging for parents or grandparents saving for a youngster's future college expenses - a program designed to allow families to afford college without accruing massive debt. State college savings programs, coupled with open residency requirements in many, have given virtually every family the opportunity to save for higher education. The new Missouri Higher Education Savings Program allows participants to make contributions to a higher education savings account on behalf of a beneficiary. Annual contributions to the account may be as large as $8000. As long as the account funds are used for a beneficiarys education costs at a qualified postsecondary institution in the United States, the contributions and earnings are free from state income taxes.
