Balance Work & Family

Marjorie Shaevitz, author and director of the Institute of Family and Work Relationships in California, outlines her tips to help anyone do a better job of balancing their work life and their family life.

1. Seek out people who are nourishing and make you glad to be alive. Why consider it a treat rather than a right to spend time with positive people who make us laugh and help us feel good about ourselves.
2. Limit the time you spend with people who are not good for you. The more time you spend with nurturers and the less with drainers, the more capable you will become. "Growing" is not a common result of enduring the negative people in our lives.
3. Laugh a whole lot more!!! Consciously seek out people, books, movies, situations and anything else to help you laugh more in life. Write down funny things you’ve experienced so you can share them, clip funny cartoons from newspapers or magazines. Be alert for particularly funny sayings and post them at home or in the office.
