Is Your Home Fire Safe? Part 1

Is your home fire safe? According to the National Fire Protection Association, home fires cause more than $5 billion in property damage each year, and more than 3,000 deaths. Fortunately, most fires are preventable. To help prevent fires in your home, consider the following:

Always stay near the stove when cooking. If a grease fire should occur, never put water on it. It will only cause the grease to splatter, burning you or spreading the fire.

Cigarettes are the leading cause of fire deaths. Never smoke in bed or in a place where you may fall asleep. Also, use deep ashtrays.

To be even more fire safe...

Keep matches and lighters up high, out of the reach and sight of children.

Don’t use light bulbs with greater wattages than a fixture can handle.

Leave plenty of air space around appliances and television sets. They can over heat and catch fire.
