Defusing Defensive CoWorkers
Anyone who has been asked probing questions or received criticism from coworkers knows that it can be difficult to not act defensively. This is especially true when it occurs often, or the relationship between the two parties is less than friendly. If you have trouble with someone you work with, you might try some of these tactics to ease the tension between you.
Be clear. In all of our communications, it is up to us to make ourselves understood.
Recognize peoples "hot spots." While it is impossible to avoid every work-related subject that might be unpleasant, we can try to be more aware of what upsets our coworkers.
Depersonalize the issue. This can be done by focusing the criticism on the work--not the person.
Think before you pounce. Give thought to the matter before approaching someone with a concern.
