Kids Can Be Smart Consumers

Is it possible to teach your children to be smart consumers? Yes, if you can take an approach that is powerful enough to counter the 25 hours of television the average child watches per week and is more influential than the barrage of advertising aimed at our kids. To raise savvy shoppers the approach to take is called parental guidance.

Respect peer pressure. Face it, our kids spend more time with their peers than parents but buying something to become more popular with a crowd doesn’t always work. The smart shopper gets value and quantity for their money.

Talk about advertising. Advertisements do not always tell us what we need to know to make a wise purchase.

As a parent, it is up to you to model good buying behavior. Show children how to compare items, read labels and check for quality.

Realize that you are building life skills. Will your child know how to be a smart consumer as an adult?
