Driveway-Repair Scams
Harsh winters can make asphalt driveways look worn and faded. Be on the alert this spring and summer for con-artists representing themselves as driveway-repair crews that offer paving and sealing services.
Successful blacktopping scams depend on the ability of con artists to "hit and run." They wander from town to town offering low estimates and making false guarantees about quality.
- Be wary of repair crews who solicit door-to-door.
- Be wary of pressure to have work done immediately.
- Get a written estimate and contract before allowing work to begin.
- Compare estimates and look at examples of the company's work.
- Never allow repair crew members into your home without supervising them at all times.
- Always note license plate numbers and descriptions of repair crew vehicles.
- Report any suspicious crews to the police, sheriff, or the Attorney General.
