Recent terrorism acts in
and upon the United States have caused organizations and communities
everywhere to consider "How safe are we?" and "Would
we be able and ready to handle a crisis should it occur closer to
home?" Community Emergency Management is a new Extension
program that will assist communities in taking vital steps toward
improving their infrastructure for:

In times of emergency,
nothing is more important to communities than having access to the
right people, the right resources, and the right information.
Information
technology is playing an increasingly significant role in how people
access and use information. A CD specialist can introduce your
community to Extension programs for community networking and community
information, such as Missouri Express and Community Connection.
Communities that build their telecommunications capacity are better
connected both internally when emergencies arise, and externally to needed
expertise and assistance.

Organizational
development
Much of how a community
responds to crisis depends upon the strength, capacity, and efficiency
of its local organizations. Organizations that have an appropriate
structure, that function well internally, and that have highly skilled
people are more effective at helping communities respond to crises
and work through periods of transition and recovery. An emerging
program area in Organizational Development and Nonprofit Management
can work with organizations on these issues. Specifically, a
CD specialist can work with individuals or groups of community-based
organizations on:
