Summary
To participate in the planning, management and implementation of the Health Care Foundation of Kansas City funded school Gardens program “Eating from the Garden” in Jackson, county under the guidance of the Horticulture and Nutrition faculty
Characteristic Duties
20% Coordinate and implement the “Eating from the Garden” project, including collaborating with schools, KC Community Gardens, Master Gardeners, volunteers, advisory councils and committees.
25% Teach assigned curriculum and educational content in gardening and nutrition.
15% Promote program and recruit schools and community centers where this project should be implemented. Target is to implement this program in 10 schools/community centers in 1 year and an additional 5 schools/ community centers every year afterwards. Approximately 450 fourth and fifth grade students are expected to complete the program. Focus is on at-risk students in limited income schools.
15% Recruit and train teachers, parents and volunteers who will serve as nutrition garden volunteers. Organize and teach at least 20 volunteers per year.
10% Develop school garden sites at each participating school in cooperation with schools, volunteers and Kansas City Community Gardens.
5% Generate additional financial and in-kind resources such as seeds, plants, and equipment.
5% Collect and communicate program impact and accomplishments by maintaining information in the MU Extension WebApps system. In addition, perform record keeping and data entry as necessary for program evaluation.
5% Participate in training and development opportunities appropriate for the position.
Conduct all activities in accordance with the Civil Rights Acts, Title IX, Rehabilitation, Americans with Disabilities Act and local, state and region affirmative action plans.
As with all positions, involvement with other duties and responsibilities may be expected in order to support the mission and purpose of MU Extension.
Supervision Received
Leadership and supervision is received from Horticulture and Nutrition Specialists Director.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree with academic training in nutrition and/or horticulture.
Ability to travel and to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends.
Additional Preferred Qualifications
Experience in education, horticulture, nutrition or related field.
Ability to understand, synthesize and communicate relevant information to diverse audiences.
Ability to work with a minimum of supervision in an unstructured setting.
Ability to effectively use information technology including a variety of Windows-based computer software programs.
