Employees First policy on academic hiring

Employees First Policy/Process

The Employees First process provides University of Missouri Extension employees opportunity for development and career advancement through transfer and/or promotion from within.

Scope

This policy may apply to benefit-eligible academic positions. The hiring manager and/or human resources manager may determine which academic positions to post through the Employees First process prior to posting externally.

Posting process

When an approved position becomes available for Employees First posting, Extension Human Resources will post the position on the Extension Career Opportunities website, noting that the position is an Employees First vacancy. The position will be posted for a minimum of ten (10) working days.

If no eligible employees apply by 5:00 pm on the closing date, the vacancy will be open for external applicants to apply. MU Extension employees who do not apply or are not considered for the position during the Employees First process may choose to apply with external applicants.

Eligibility to apply

In order to be eligible to apply for Employees First job postings, the following criteria must be met:

  • Must be an MU Extension benefit-eligible faculty or staff employee
  • Must have a positive history of performance appraisals with no other concerns relative to performance
  • Must not have a written warning on file within the last two years or be on disciplinary probation or suspension
  • Must meet the minimum academic degree required for the position

Application process

Interested candidates who meet the eligibility criteria must apply to the Extension Human Resources department no later than 5:00 pm of the Employees First closing date. The employee must submit the following:

  • Letter of intent documenting the applicant’s qualifications for the position and an explanation of why the position is desired by the individual
  • An updated resume or vitae
  • Copies of all academic transcripts if not already on file with MU Extension HR

Interview and hiring process

If there are qualified internal applicants, an application materials review will be conducted to review the academic credentials and performance reviews of the individual(s).

Reference checks will be conducted, including contacting the employee’s immediate supervisor and/or director to verify performance. The personnel file may also be reviewed. Staffing limitations or other circumstances that might affect a prospective transfer or promotion may also be discussed.

Eligible candidates with acceptable credentials, performance reviews, and references may be interviewed. Meeting minimum requirements does not necessarily guarantee an interview.

MU Extension supports and encourages the Employees First process to enhance opportunities for development and career advancement through transfers/promotions within. However, the hiring manager or human resources may elect not to post positions internally. In addition, employees are not guaranteed a transfer/promotion when applying through Employees First.
