It's Time for the 2000 County Fair Hay Show |

Competition improves the quality of many things. Hay is no different. Only, the quality is out there but no one can tell just who has the best hay unless it is judged. The Callaway County fair is less than a week away so all you hay producers need to begin to select the ten best small square bales or two large round bales for each class. If you are selling hay, this is an opportunity to get paid for advertising the quality of your hay. Participants can also enter hay in the Missouri State Fair at the same time. Again in 1999, no one was brave enough to bring a couple of "big ones" in for judging. Maybe its because a gas powered saw is used to take samples from a big round bales. You would think that was a big enough show to attract entries. The hay needs to be at the fairgrounds between 8:00 A.M. and 10:00 A.M. on Monday July 31, 2000 for judging. This show is open to all residents of Callaway and adjoining counties. The hay must have been harvested during the 2000 season. There is a $5.00 entry fee for each class entry and exhibitors are limited to two entries per class. State Fair entries need to pay the separate entry fee to cover the expense of feeding value analysis from the Livestock Nutrition Laboratory Services. The county classes are 1) Alfalfa, 2) Legume, 3) Legume/Grass, 4) Cool Season Grass, 5) Other Hay (this includes small grain, summer annuals, warm season grasses, etc.). Ten classes are featured at the State Fair including a new class for balage. Award premiums for each class are: First Place; $16.00, Second Place; $14.00, Third Place; $12.00, Fourth Place; $10.00, and Fifth Place; $8.00. It is likely that anyone entering will more than make back their entry fee. Judging will be on the basis of relative feed value, color, condition, smell or aroma, and purity. Naturally, the decision of the judge will be final. The sponsor for this event is Moormans Feed. Complete rules, regulations and information on the Callaway County Hay Show are on page 49 of the Kingdom of Callaway 2000 Fair Book. Last year Callaway County had the Champion alfalfa hay and the Grand Champion hay at the Missouri State Fair. So, all hay producers have a goal to reach for. More information on the County and State Fair hay contests is available at the Callaway County MU Extension Center…
