The 76th Annual Callaway County Soils & Crops Conference |

The 76th annual Callaway County Soils & Crops Conference will be held on Thursday, January 27, 2000 at the Callaway Extension Center located in the Callaway County Courthouse Annex 1/4 mile west of Highway 54 off State Highway F, on County Road 302, just off Airport Drive (County Road 304). Registration for the conference will begin at 9:00 a.m. with coffee and doughnuts provided by Farm Credit Service and local agricultural chemical company representatives. The main program will begin at 9:30 with a welcome from Joe Shryoock, the Callaway County Soils & Crops Conference chairman for the year 2000. Cheryl Livengood, a Resource Conservationist with the National Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) will be first on the program to give an update of current programs provided by NRCS for Callaway County landowners. Next, Nicholas Kaliatzandonakes, Associate Professor of Agricultural Economics will speak on (genetically modified organism) GMO crops and their overseas marketing implications for the coming year. John Travlos, the systems manager for the agricultural electronic bulletin board (AgEBB) will discuss "Farming the Internet". The Internet has certainly become a hot topic. Learn about the agricultural information, management resources available and precautions needed when "you're on line". The last speaker before lunch is Craig Roberts, also from the University of Missouri, where he is an Associate Professor of Agronomy and Extension Forage Specialist. He will speak on "A Friendly Fescue Fungus". It seems the idea that fungus infested fescue being a bad thing may become a thing of the past. After lunch, a fencing panel will discuss different methods of modern and traditional fencing used in Callaway County. The panel's moderator will be Cheryl Livengood who will also explain the cost share available from NRCS through their DSP-3 program. Robert Maddox will speak on some of the types of fencing used at a commercial operation. Finally, David Coplan will talk about how a cost share can benefit fencing expenses in rotational grazing systems. There will be a display of different types of fencing available. A question and answer period will follow the panel member discussion. Harry Minor is an Associate Professor of Agronomy and State Extension Specialist. He directs the University of Missouri's variety testing program. Dr. Minor will talk about yield results from crop varieties tested during 1999. His talks have been a regular highlight of our Soils and Crops Conferences. Copies of the current variety trial books on soybeans, field corn, white corn and grain sorghum will be available. The final speaker of the day is Bill Johnson, also a State Extension Specialist and Assistant Professor of Agronomy. His specialty is weed science. Dr. Johnson will discuss the new herbicides, herbicide mixtures, and herbicide uses in field crops for the coming growing season. On Friday, Bill will discuss his herbicide resistant crop research at the Audrain County Soils and Crops Conference The conference should adjourn on or before 2:30 p.m. Officers of the year 2000 Callaway Soils & Crops Conference committee are: Bill Frank Chairman; Joe Shryock, Vice-Chairman; Phillip Loyd, Secretary; Rodney Garnett; Registrar.
