Irrigation Conference |

The Bootheel Irrigation Conference and Trade Show is scheduled for Dec. 8 at Rone Hall, on Route TT about four miles east of the University of Missouri Delta Research Center. If you cannot make it to Portageville, the Telecommunication Community Resource Center (TCRC) at Mexico and a Columbia location will be broadcasting the program from 8:00 a.m. to noon. There will be 2 hours of CCA credit available for Certified Crop Advisors. Registration the day of the conference at Rone Hall costs $10 (FREE at the TCRCs) and opens at 6 a.m. with a 6:30 early bird breakfast and trade show. The regular sessions commence at 8 a.m. with introductory remarks by John Gardner, MU associate dean for Extension, Columbia, Mo. Among the speakers are MU agronomist Peter Scharf, who will discuss fertigation in corn. Ken Sudduth, director of Missouri Precision Agriculture Center (MPAC), will talk about the results of his research into using infrared sensors to schedule irrigation. MU Delta Center soybean breeder Grover Shannon will moderate a panel discussion between farmers on minimum tillage and irrigation. Delta irrigation specialist Joe Henggeler will serve as moderator in a discussion about irrigation scheduling. Other speakers hale from the University of Kansas, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, the USDA Agricultural Research Service and several large agricultural corporations. After lunch, they can choose to attend two of the three afternoon workshops: University of Arkansas specialists will discuss irrigation scheduling and show how to obtain a free copy of software for the Arkansas Scheduler, a tool of proven effectiveness. MU marketing specialist David Reinbott will provide market outlooks and recommend marketing strategies for corn, soybeans, wheat, cotton and rice. Several Natural Resource Conservation Service specialists will speak on irrigation system management and distribute free poly-pipe hole punchers at the Bootheel location. An Irrigated Vegetable Banquet, also at Rone Hall, will be held at 5 p.m. the evening before the conference. It includes a discussion of fertigation and irrigation in vegetables as well as a trade show. Again, for anyone unable to travel south for the conference, it will broadcast and can be seen at any of the University of Missouri Extension's Telecommunication Community Resource Centers (TCRC). The closest TCRC in central Missouri is in Mexico at the Advanced Technology Center, 2900 Doreli Lane off Buisness 54 South also the program will be broadcast at the University of Missouri's Heinkel building, room 22, on the corner of Locust and 6th Street in Columbia.
