Trap set up with 2001 lure.

Trap is located one mile west of the Callaway County MU Extension Center.

Predictions on the date of occurrence can be made from these moth captures. Predictions are not accurate on numbers or severity of damage, only timing. Occurrence timing is valuable to make surveys more efficient.

Early season European corn borer (ECB) scouting should begin in mid - Missouri about 11 to 12 days after the first spring moth flight has caught in traps or moths seen in grassy field margins. Check taller corn plants for a flat creamy colored egg mass under leaves near the midrib and small holes in the leaf. If holes are found, pull the whorl and unroll to look for small dark head/light body worms. If 50% of the corn plants are found with one or more borers per plant, treatment may be necessary. Management formulas are available to more accurately predict the value of treatment.

Later season ECB scouting should begin a week to 10 days after moths have been caught in traps. Eggs and larvae are found on later planted corn in July. Tasseling and silking corn is most attractive. Borers are found around the ear zone. Early stages feed on pollen in leaf axils before boring into the stalk or ear shank.
