Supervision 101 (Session 1 of 2)

Wednesday, May 17, 2017, 9 a.m. to noon

2436 Tanner Bridge Road, Jefferson City MO map...

It makes sense to hire front-line staff into supervisory positions; they have the technical skills you are looking for, it’s motivational to all employees, and reduces the costs of hiring from outside. Often times, these employees lack the leadership skills necessary to thrive in their new roles.  Supervision 101 provides training in the basic skills needed by front-line supervisors. This program is instructed in two sessions.  Session 1 addresses: Defining your supervisory role

  • Discuss the difficulties of transitioning from individual contributor to supervisor
  • Identify the differences between management and leadership
  Planning work
  • Discuss the differences between desired production and production capacity
  • Explore four stages of a work planning model
  • Develop an action plan for one work-related team goal
  • Examine an empowering model of delegation
  • Practice using the delegation model to increase your effectiveness
Session 2 is the following day.  Motivating employees
  • Identify overall coaching and motivation strategies using the Can Do/Will Do grid
  • Explore how motivation impacts employee performance
  • Examine intrinsic rewards
  Evaluation and follow-up
  • Explore the performance pyramid as a model to help you evaluate employee performance
  • Identify how to effectively give positive reinforcement and feedback for improvement when coaching employees
  Conflict resolution
  • Understand the three stages of conflict and how to recognize them
  • Learn the options supervisors have to resolve conflict.
