Wurdack Grazing School

Description:
The University of Missouri Wurdack Farm at Cook Station, will host a Management Intensive Grazing School September 27 & 28. The two-day program will include guest speakers covering the topics of grazing system layout and design, watering systems, fence systems, soil fertility, livestock nutrition, and forage quality and growth. Additionally, two farm tours will be included to allow participants to get hands on experience, and observe existing grazing systems.

Building Communities from the Grassroots is the first of the three course that comprise the Community Development Academy. The purpose of this highly participatory course is to enhance the capacity to work effectively with community people on such diverse issues as water quality, child development, land use, economic development, youth at risk, infrastructure development, welfare-to-work, economic development, leadership development, etc. This intensive, experiential course deals with basic community development concepts, procedures and practical skills for use in involving and empowering local citizens and leaders to be effective in community-based work. more...

In addition to the registration fee, there are food and lodging costs for participants the week of the course. Options are: Meals and Lodging $500 for a double occupancy room at The Elms Resort or Meals and Lodging $625.00 for a single occupancy room at The Elms Resort or Meals and Monday evening event $205.00 for Commuters. International participants coming from abroad may need to apply for a scholar's visa, which costs $150 for processing the necessary documentation.

Eat Well, Be Well with Diabetes is a 4-class series designed to provide those with type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes with practical information and skills needed to self-manage diabetes and promote optimal health. The program teaches the many aspects of diabetes self-care with a strong focus on nutrition. Spouses and other family members of those with diabetes will also benefit from the classes.
The program includes demonstration and tasting of easy recipes as well as hands-on
activities to encourage discussion and sharing among all participants. You will receive copies of all recipes used in-class plus many more for home use.

In this session we will discuss Hemoglobin A1C and what it means. We will also discuss ways to respond to high and low blood sugar and how to prevent complications from diabetes.

Justin Sexten, University of Missouri beef nutritionist, along with the Missouri Corn Merchandising Council and the Missouri Cattleman’s Association will be conducting an on-farm demonstration on how to ammoniate corn stover bales to improve digestibility and protein. Sexten will also demonstrate treatment of processed corn stover with calcium hydroxide. Stover digestibility is improved with this process and the protein content remains unchanged.
