Community Development Academy Course One: Building Communities from the Grassroots (Session 3 of 5)

Building Communities from the Grassroots is the first of the three course that comprise the Community Development Academy. The purpose of this highly participatory course is to enhance the capacity to work effectively with community people on such diverse issues as water quality, child development, land use, economic development, youth at risk, infrastructure development, welfare-to-work, economic development, leadership development, etc. This intensive, experiential course deals with basic community development concepts, procedures and practical skills for use in involving and empowering local citizens and leaders to be effective in community-based work. more...

Course One can be taken as non-credit (earning 3.5 CEUs) for $500; or Course One can be taken for undergraduate credit earning 3 credit hours at $982.20; or, Course One can be taken for graduate credit earning 3 credit hours at $1,183.50. There are additional requirements & assignments for those who take the course for academic credit. There are a limited number of registration fee waivers available for those who take Course One for non-credit. For information contact Tracie Vangel at 573-882-8393 (vangelt@missouri.edu).
In addition to the registration fee, there are food and lodging costs for participants the week of the course. Options are: Meals and Lodging $500 for a double occupancy room at The Elms Resort or Meals and Lodging $625.00 for a single occupancy room at The Elms Resort or Meals and Monday evening event $205.00 for Commuters. International participants coming from abroad may need to apply for a scholar's visa, which costs $150 for processing the necessary documentation.

Stay Strong Stay Healthy is strength training for middle-aged and older adults who want to improve quality of life and stay active. Instructors have been trained by University of Missouri fitness staff to lead this program. The exercises are easy to learn, safe and effective. Eat Well Be Well with Diabetes includes four, two-hour weekly sessions that provides people with type 2 diabetes, and their family members, with knowledge and skills necessary for proper diabetes self-management. Knowledge and skills gained in the program can be applied to preventing diabetes particularly for people with pre-diabetes. The series include a strong focus on nutrition, the cornerstone of diabetes management, but also covers other self-management strategies to help individuals avoid short-term and long-term diabetes complications.

Stay Strong, Stay Healthy is a strength training program developed by Tufts University to help men and women increase strength, flexibility and balance. Missouri’s Stay Strong, Stay Healthy (SSSH) program is designed to increase middle age and older adults’ access to a safe, structured, and effective strength training program. At each session, a prescribed set of 8 upper and lower body strengthening exercises are done along with warm-up and cool-down stretches. Participants are made to feel comfortable regardless of their current fitness level so they can safely participate and gradually build the strength beneficial to health.
