Hickory County Cattlemen's Bus Tour
When: Monday, Aug. 6, 2012, 6 a.m. to Thursday, Aug. 9, 2012, 7 p.m.
Where:
Council Bluffs, Sioux Center, and Cushing, IA. Sioux City, Lake Preston, Sioux Falls, Lennox, Brookings, and De Smet, SD.
Description:
Hickory County Cattlemen’s Bus Tour is heading north to South Dakota and Iowa for a four-day, 3-night trip from Aug. 6 to Aug. 9. This tour is designed to give area cattlemen and women an inside look at the management techniques of other cattle producers and to help increase knowledge and understanding of different areas of agriculture that can affect the beef industry.
By venturing out of Missouri, participants have a unique opportunity to visit with innovative and progressive out-of-state cattle producers and agricultural entrepreneurs. Participants then have the opportunity to incorporate some of these ideas and management strategies into their existing operations or to possibly generate a completely new aspect of production on their farms. Participants may also take advantage of seeing a producers stock or facility prior to using their services.
Operation tours and visits include: Charolais, limousine, and red and black angus producers at Wienk Charolais, Bruner Limousin, and Solution Genetics; a tour of Bunge Processing, a soybean crushing facility; a visit to Trans Ova Genetics who specialize in embryo transfer and beef cattle cloning; and a manufacturing tour of Sioux Steel who produces cattle handling and working systems. The tour will also include stops at two different covered feed yards: Redstone Feeders, who have a maximum holding capacity of over 8000 head, and at Hoop Beef.
Several of these stops have websites, and these links, in addition to a complete itinerary, are available by visiting the tour information webpage.
There are currently three locations for participants to meet the charter bus for pick-up: Preston, Lincoln and Concordia, Missouri. We will be taking a northern route from 70 west to 29 north through Missouri; other pick-up locations are possible along this route so cattlemen and women throughout the state may join us. Contact the Hickory Co. MU Extension office to inquire about other potential pick-up locations.
