Ozark Empire Fair Hay Show

Relatives As Parents--Northland Grandfamilies (Session 1 of 23)

Description:

The Northland Grandfamilies program serves grandparents in Clay and Platte Counties who are raising their grandchildren. The program also serves aunts/uncles and other relatives who are raising children under the age of 18. The program seeks to raise awareness of the issues facing grandparents/aunts/uncles who are filling the parenting role. Advocacy, education and referral services are important aspects of the program. Support group meetings are scheduled twice a month, with guest speakers on topics of interest. The program is made possible by a partnership of the Clay County Extension Council, the Platte County Senior Fund and Clay County Senior Services.

Session topic:

Daytime support group meeting this month will involve the grandparents/aunts/uncles and their grandchildren/nieces/nephews for a special presentation "Healthily Ever After" by puppeteer and MU Extension nutrition educator, Kraig Kensinger.

Any grandparent who is raising grandchildren age 18 or younger is welcome to participate in Northland Grandfamilies. More than half of all marriages end in divorce, and the majority of these involve children. Conflict between parents, both before and after a divorce, is associated with many negative outcomes in children. The purpose of this workshop is to help parents learn how to nurture and support their children during and after their divorce.


Focus on Kids satisfies the Missouri law that requires parents who are divorcing to attend an educational parenting program. It is conducted in cooperation with Missouri’s circuit courts.

Franklin County Exhibit Day

4-H members display the items they have grown, raised, or made at the Franklin County Fair. Volunteers are recruited to judge the quality of items, or in some cases to interview the members about their item in a process called conference judging. Items are awarded a blue, red, or white ribbon, and the best blue ribbon items are selected to represent the county in the Missouri State Fair 4-H Building. 4-H members volunteer to help as judges assistants and to take exhibits from the registration table to the judges. Adults volunteer to help register exhibits, judge exhibits, and set up a state fair display. The items are displayed throughout the Franklin County Fair to demonstrate the achievement of county 4-H members to the general public.
