Family Nutrition Program

Stay Strong, Stay Healthy is 20 classes over 10 weeks strength training program for adults 60 years and older. The program’s goal is to improve health and quality of life. The program incorporates warm-up exercises, strengthening exercises, and cool down stretches. Over the ten weeks participants learn exercises to improve strength and balance. The class meets twice weekly and all equipment is provided.

Stay Strong, Stay Healthy is an eleven week program for middle-aged and older adults. The program's goal is to improve health and quality of life. We will be incorporating: warm-up exercises, simple strengthening exercises (with or without weights), and cool down stretches. Strength training can benefit you in many ways: Arthritis relief, improve balance, enhance flexibility, strengthen bones, weight control, lifts depression, stress reduction, reduce risks for heart disease, maintain healthy blood sugar levels, etc.

Healthy Lifestyle Initiative (Session 4 of 9)

This program will focus on issues involving becoming over weight and obese. Safe ways to lose weight on a non medically supervised program. Techniques to control over eating and safe exercise programs will be the primarey topics. A walking session will be included with most sessions. The Warren County Health Department will be partnering in the program.

Each session will discuss a different technique to aid in personal weight control. Exercise and food intake will be discussed at each session. An opportunity to weigh and exercise will be available at all class meetings. Healthy habits.

Taking Shelter from the Storm: Building a Safe Room for Your Home or Small Business

Description:

Greene County Extension will host “Taking Shelter from the Storm: Building a Safe Room in Your Home or Business,” at the Springfield-Greene County Botanical Center, 2400 S. Scenic, Springfield.

Jeff Barber, LEED AP architect and a housing and environmental design specialist with University of Missouri Extension, will lead the program.

Program information will focus on locating and constructing a safe room in a home or small business. A variety of approaches will be discussed during the program, focusing on several construction methods that are presented in the FEMA 320 document.

“The powerful destruction of recent spring storms in Joplin and Moore, Oklahoma are reminders of the dangers we face in tornado alley,” said Barber. “Knowing the risks and developing a solution that is appropriate for the homeowner or business is an important aspect of preparedness.”

Session topic:

Come learn about the variety of construction methods available for Homeowners and Small Businesses to build a Safe Room. Research based information and methods from Texas Tech University have been used to develop rooms with significant reliability.
