To become trained as a Master Gardener, an individual must attend a 30 hour classroom Core Course training. Then the Master Gardener trainee is required to give 30 hours of volunteer service back to their community in approved University of Missouri Extension activities.

Diabetes Self-Management (Session 9 of 12)

Description:

Diabetes Self-Management is a 6 week class for people living with type 2 Diabetes. This highly participatory class empowers participants to make changes and take steps to manage their condition through evidence-based practices. Subjects covered include: 1) techniques to deal with the symptoms of diabetes, fatigue, pain, hyper/hypoglycemia, stress, and emotional problems such as depression, anger, fear and frustration; 2) appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength and endurance; 3) healthy eating 4) appropriate use of medication; and 5) working more effectively with health care providers. Participants will make weekly action plans, share experiences, and help each other solve problems they encounter in creating and carrying out their self-management program.

A Matter of Balance (Session 8 of 8)

Description:

A Matter of Balance is an award winning program designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase the activity levels of older adults who have concerns about falls. This program is taught by University of Missouri Extension Specialists and consists of eight, two-hour sessions. The sessions help participants learn how to view falls and the fear of falling as something controllable. There will also be information on how to set realistic goals for increasing activity, as well as how to change their environment to reduce fall risk factors. In general the program promotes exercise to increase strength and balance to help reduce the risk of falls in older adults.

Cooking Matters for Adults in Pettis County (Session 1 of 6)

Cooking Matters is a hands-on cooking class where objectives focus on important aspects of selecting and preparing nutritious, safe, and low-cost foods. Participants will also learn how to eat healthier, cook healthier, read nutrition labels, and skills for smart grocery shopping on a budget. Participants get to take home free groceries to prepare a recipe a second time at their home.

Session topic:

Participants will complete pre-program paperwork, discuss a nutrition topic, and complete 2-3 recipes. The class will sample their recipes and clean up dishes and cooking spaces.

4-H Camp at Heit's Point (Session 1 of 2)

4-H camp has a rich history and tradition in Missouri. 4-H staff have conducted camps for more than 60 years. Historically, 4-H camps were some of the original users of the group camp facilities found in Missouri state parks, and today many 4-H camps still use them.

The University of Missouri Extension and Central Missouri Regional Arthritis Center are offering the six-week workshop "Living A Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions" licensed by Stanford University. This workshop will teach persons with chronic conditions and their caregivers the tools needed to design their own self-management program so they can live a longer and healthier life. Workshop participants will learn tips on the following topics: how to eat well and exercise how to manage their symptoms how to relax and handle difficult emotions develop effective problem-solving skills how to work well with their doctor and how to manage their medications Participants will receive a copy of the workshop manual, Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions and a relaxation cd. They will also receive weekly giveaways.

Cooking Matters-Marshfield (Session 6 of 6)

Cooking Matters is a 6-session culinary-based nutrition education program that is delivered through; powerful, engaging lessons featuring hands-on learning that include group discussion with instructors. Program Goal: This program’s main goals are: 1. to provide knowledge and skills to help seniors prepare food at home more, and become aware of the negative health behaviors associated with obesity and sedentary lifestyles. The primary objectives are to teach: (1) Cooking tips and techniques; (ii) tips for proper food safety; (iii) storage and sanitation; (iv) nutrition and health information to ensure optimal health; (v) budgeting -stretching food dollars and maximizing resources; (vi) tips to get families to try new foods; and (vii) shopping healthfully on a limited budget. The program evaluates participants at week 1 and week 6 and behavior changes occur consistently in all individuals.
