Women In Small Farms - Kansas City (Session 4 of 4)

Description:

“Women In Small Farms” is an educational program designed for small farm women (less than 100 acres) experienced or new to the business. Topics include: risk management, ownership of property, financial statements, writing a business plan, estate planning, communication issues, personality traits, and marketing. The course will be taught by University of Missouri Extension Agricultural Business Specialist, Nathanial Cahill. “Women In Small Farms” provides farm women with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to make informed management decisions regarding their farm business operations. This will enable farm women to become better managers, and in turn, increase the viability of their farming operation. It also gives farm women an opportunity to network and interact with other women involved in agriculture.

Master Gardener Training Level 1 - Phelps County (Session 13 of 13)

The Master Gardener program serves as a valuable and reliable source of horticultural and environmental information and expert volunteer service in Missouri. A love of gardening and a desire to learn are the only qualifications for entering the Master Gardener program. Master Gardeners complete 30 hours of volunteer service following their initial training. Subsequent years require 20 hours of volunteer service. Master Gardener Program (Session 3 of 10)

Description:

The Master Gardener volunteer program began in the early 1970’s in response to the rapidly increasing interest in home gardening. The idea was to train knowledgeable garden volunteers to help University Extension staff deliver home gardening information to the public. The idea worked! Today, the Master Gardener volunteer program is recognized nationally as a means for individuals to learn and to share horticultural knowledge with others. A successful candidate for the program is anyone able and willing to donate volunteer hours in the community and/or MU Extension education programs. Master Gardeners develop their gardening and community potential while their efforts help others in the community. Master Gardeners serve as representatives of the University of Missouri Extension. They may engage in a variety of interesting education activities that benefit the community. After completing the course all first-year Master Gardeners must volunteer for 30 hours work to be completing this in Hickory County to complete the program. COURSE CONTENT Course consists of eleven, 3-hour sessions covering the following topics: Orientation and Paperwork (2 HR Max.) Understanding Soil and Plant Nutrition Plant Growth and Development Annual / Floral and Vegetable Production Perennial Gardening (Trees, Shrubs, and Perennial plants) Raised Bed and Container Grown Gardening Insect and/or Integrated Pest Management Fruit Trees, Bramble Berries, and Grape Production Lawn and Turf Management Plant Diagnostics and Disease Control Greenhouses and High Tunnels Courses will be conducted by MU Extension Specialists and other professionals.

Missouri 4-H Dairy Cow Camp

When:  Wednesday, May 24, 2017, 1 p.m. to Friday, May 26, 2017, 3 p.m.

Description:

Youth ages 8-18 interested in learning about the dairy industry will want to register for 4-H Dairy Cow Camp, scheduled for May 24-26. “This camp draws attention to the importance of farming and its important role in Missouri’s economy. It provides youth a “hands-on” opportunity to care for dairy animals and learn about many aspects of dairy production while learning life-skills at the same time,” according to Karla Deaver, 4-H Youth Development Specialist. Campers work in pairs under the direction of adults and take part in workshops to learn about judging dairy animals, dairy management, animal care ethics and showmanship. Persons working in the dairy industry visit with campers about careers in the dairy industry as well. Participants at the 2017 cow camp will also be certified in the Show-Me Quality Assurance program. The primary goal of the program is to increase the knowledge and awareness of Missouri youth about food quality issues related to animal production. Cooking Matters-Climax Springs (Session 2 of 6)

Description:

Cooking Matters is a 6-session culinary-based nutrition education program that is delivered through; powerful, engaging lessons featuring hands-on learning that include group discussion with instructors. Program Goal: This program’s main goals are: 1. to provide knowledge and skills to help seniors prepare food at home more, and become aware of the negative health behaviors associated with obesity and sedentary lifestyles. The primary objectives are to teach: (1) Cooking tips and techniques; (ii) tips for proper food safety; (iii) storage and sanitation; (iv) nutrition and health information to ensure optimal health; (v) budgeting -stretching food dollars and maximizing resources; (vi) tips to get families to try new foods; and (vii) shopping healthfully on a limited budget. The program evaluates participants at week 1 and week 6 and behavior changes occur consistently in all individuals.

Monarch Habitat Program
