University of Missouri Extension and the Howell County Extension Center is offering a Leadership Academy in West Plains beginning May 1. Missouri Training Institute Leadership Series under the direction of University of Missouri Extension offers top-notch training for managers and leaders in all industries including government, for-profit and non-profit organizations operating in southwest Missouri and northern Arkansas.

The professional series will address the following topics: building effective relationships, communicating successfully, leading high-performance teams, strategic planning and action planning.
The training will take place over five days with classes beginning on Thursday, May 1 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and continuing each Thursday in May. All classes will be held at the Howell County Extension Center, 217 Aid Ave., West Plains.

Stay Strong, Stay Healthy (Session 1 of 10)

Description:

SSSH is modeled after the evidenced-based StrongWomen program developed by researchers at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science at Tufts University. While the original Tufts program includes only women, University of Missouri Extension has adapted the curriculum to include men.

Missouri’s Stay Strong, Stay Healthy (SSSH) program is designed to increase aging adults’ access to a safe, structured, and effective strength training program. Over the 10 weeks, participants learn exercises to improve their strength, flexibility and balance. At each session, a prescribed set of 8 upper and lower body strengthening exercises are done along with warm-up and cool-down stretches. Participants are made to feel comfortable regardless of their current fitness level so they can safely participate and gradually build the strength beneficial to health.

Session topic:

This is the first session of a 10 week series. Each participant will be assessed for strength, flexibility, and balance. The group will be introduced to the program and learn the exercises that will be used throughout the program.

The Greene County MU Extension office is pleased to host the 2014 Organic Gardening Academy. This series of classes related to organic gardening will present proven, science based techniques on a wide range of topics. Each class will include a presentation of the subject, followed by a hands-on demonstration of the techniques learned during the class. The speakers have a passion for organic gardening, and subject matter expertise.
