Stay Strong, Stay Healthy is an ten-week strength training program for middle-aged and older adults. The program’s goal is to improve health and quality of life. The class will meet once a week.

We will incorporate warm-up exercises; simple strengthening exercises, with or without weights; and cool down stretches. Weights are provided for the class. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Bring water bottle and towel.

Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training

Description:

A Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training will be held in February that is open to all interested adults and teens. Through this program you'll learn about emergency preparedness and basic disaster response skills, such as how to operate a fire extinguisher, light search and rescue, emergency medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help.

The three-day program will be held Feb. 4, 9:00 to 3:00; Feb. 11, 9;00 to 3:00, and Feb. 18, 9:00 to noon (this final day is a disaster simulation exercise).

Strength in Numbers is based on the idea that people are more likely to change habits with the support of the people around them. Existing groups become a Strength in Numbers group. Group leaders receive lesson plans and packets for participants each month. They present the lesson plan and screening challenge and lead group members as they set a health goal each month. Group members support each other in achieving their health goal each month.

In this first class, we will introduce Strength in Numbers. Group leaders will receive a lesson on heart disease to present to their group. Group leaders will challenge members to be screened for cholesterol. Each member will set a health goal.

Building Strong Families (Session 3 of 10)

The Building Strong Families program is taught year-round in partnership with Hillcrest Ministries, a faith-based social service agency and transitional housing program serving homeless families in the greater Kansas City area. When accepted into the Hillcrest program, adults agree to participate in an intensive 90-day program that emphasizes life-skills and financial solvency. Several modules from the Building Strong Families curriculum are utilized in the life-skills education component.
