Ounce of Prevention - Health Fair for Lone Star & Gatewood

It was a health fair scheduled at two junior highs, Lone Star and Gatewood. Topics taught include puberty/hygiene; prescription drug prevention; bullying; and cyberbullying.

The Reynolds County Extension Council and the Arthritis Foundation will be hosting a series of Arthritis Exercise Classes for the Month of December.
Program is a community based, recreational group exercise and education program designed specifically for people with arthritis and related diseases.

In older adults, poor diet and lack of physical activity contribute to declining muscle mass and thinning of the bones. Without adequate muscle mass and bone strength, older adults are more prone to falls and are more likely to develop osteoporosis, which currently affects about 55 percent of people over age 50. In this group, falls are more likely to result in broken bones.

This live television program is intended to educate viewers on a wide range of topics related to gardening in the Ozarks. Chris Smith and others from KOLR10 television, Springfield, conduct the interview, which includes MU Extension horticulture specialists and others with gardening expertise. The program airs on Thursdays on the KOLR10 Midday Newscast, at 11:15am.

Winning Government Contracts: The First Steps

This introductory 3-hour seminar is an overview of the critical first steps associated with winning government contracts. The Missouri Procurement Technical Assistance Center (MO PTAC) host a bi-monthly seminar on how to get started in the government contracting arena including federal, state and local government registrations and certifications. The seminar will also cover MO PTAC services available to assist Missouri businesses in all aspects of government contracting.

Focus on Kids

More than half of all marriages end in divorce, and the majority of these involve children. Conflict between parents, both before and after a divorce, is associated with many negative outcomes in children. The purpose of this workshop is to help parents learn how to nurture and support their children during and after their divorce.
Focus on Kids satisfies the Missouri law that requires parents who are divorcing to attend an educational parenting program. It is conducted in cooperation with Missouri’s circuit courts.

Parent education class for divorcing or separating parents with children. Parents will learn about ways to manage conflicts and disagreements and techniques that can improve communication with co-parent.
2013 Focus on Kids Classes in Pike County are held on the 3rd Thursday of the month with the exception of March which is scheduled on the fourth Thursday and September through November which will be the second Thursday of the month. Call 573-324-5464 to register. If you are more than 10 minutes late for the class, you will need to reschedule. Soil and Forage Testing Workshop

University of Missouri Howell County Extension will host a Soil and Forage Testing Workshop on December 5, 2013 at Howell County Extension Center beginning at 6:00 pm. Agronomy Specialist, Sarah Kenyon will discuss interpreting soil testing results and fertilizing on a budget. Livestock Specialist, Logan Wallace will provide information on understanding forage/hay testing results and using results to supplement beef cattle.
