The tour will begin at the Oregon County Extension office and tour 3 facilities in the county.
Courthouse, Alton MO map...

Description:

What is a high tunnel? They act much like a greenhouse, but instead of being a temporary starting spot for plants, high tunnels serve as a permanent growing spot for plants. Farmers are able to extend their growing season which in the end means more locally grown produce. Besides an extended growing season, high tunnels offer other advantages including weather protection such as drought, driving rain, wind, hail, and extreme temperatures. They are labor efficient due to it being a covered structure; most tasks (planting, pruning, trellising, pest control, harvest, etc.) can be performed unaffected by the weather. Environmental control by which growers have more control over growing conditions and the environment by water control, fertility, and temperature is another advantage. Plant diseases, weeds, and wildlife management is reduced. And, revenue is increased revenue per square foot due to the protected microclimate. Melissa Welch, District Conservationist with the NRCS – USDA Service Center, will provide information about financial and technical assistance and the deadline to apply for anyone interested in the Seasonal High Tunnel Initiative Program.

Session topic:

See how seasonal high tunnels extend the growing season for vegetables and other specialty crops. Visit with the high tunnel owners. Learn about available cost share assistance.
