The University of Missouri Extension is offering the six-week workshop "Show Me Better Health" licensed by Stanford University. This workshop will teach persons with chronic conditions and their caregivers the tools needed to design their own self-management program so they can live a longer and healthier life. Workshop participants will learn tips on how to eat well and exercise; how to manage their symptoms; how to relax and handle difficult emotions; develop effective problem-solving skills; how to work well with their doctor; and how to manage their medications. They will receive a copy of the workshop manual, Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions and a relaxation cd.

Description:

Missouri's SSSH program is designed to increase aging adults access to a safe, structured and effective strength training program. Over 8 weeks, participants learn exercises to improve their strength, flexibility and balance. During each session, a prescribed set of 8 upper and lower body strengthening exercises are done along with warm-up and cool-down stretches. Participants are made to feel comfortable regardless of their current fitness level so they can safely participate and gradually build the strength beneficial to health. SSSH is modeled after the evidenced-based StrongWomen program developed by researchers at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science at Tufts University. While the original Tufts program includes only women, University of Missouri Extension has adapted the curriculum to include men.
