    Diabetes Self-Management (Session 3 of 6)

    Description:

    This course is designed for help people who have diabetes or individuals who care for someone who has diabetes to become better self-managers of their condition. This program will consist of six sessions each lasting 2 to 2 1/2 hours. Participants will learn to plan healthful meals with balanced carbohydrates, learn more about the benefits of physical activity, discuss blood sugar highs and lows, and how to communicate more effectively with health professionals. Participants will receive a free book and weekly prizes!

    Private Pesticide Applicator Training (Session 1 of 2)

    Description:

    In accordance with the Missouri Pesticide Use Act all individuals 18 years or older that purchase, mix, apply or supervise the use of restricted use pesticides must be licensed by the Missouri Department of Agriculture. Prior to private applicator licensing, the individual must receive training from the University of Missouri Extension. PAT training is for private applicator certification and re-certification. Private applicators are individuals involved in the production of agriculture commodities on property they own or rent.

    Nodaway County Private Pesticide Applicator Training and Ag Update

    Description:

    The Private Pesticide Applicator Training (PPAT) Program at the University of Missouri involves the initial training and recertification of Missouri’s approximately 24,000 private pesticide applicators. The need for training in the application of pesticides is of high importance due to both the legal requirements and a real need for technical knowledge. Society’s demands for a cleaner environment encourage private applicators (farmers) to increase their knowledge and put new practices into use. The MU private pesticide applicator program reaches into essentially each of Missouri's 114 counties to train farmers on the safe and proper use of agricultural pesticides on their farmlands, including restricted-use pesticides (RUPs).

    Southwest Missouri MU Extension Beef Cattle Conference

    The Southwest Missouri MU Extension Beef Cattle Conference begins at 4 p. m., January 26, 2017, at the Stockton United Methodist Church Family Life Center in Stockton, Mo. The Southwest Missouri MU Extension Beef Cattle Conference is designed to provide the latest information on beef cattle production, marketing, economics, nutrition, and forage utilization. Presenters at the meeting include Bob Schultheis, Natural Resource Engineer Specialist, MU Extension Webster County, presentation titled “Hay Storage and Feeding Management”, Jordan Thomas, Senior Research Specialist and Ph.D. Candidate at University of Missouri, presentation titled “Beef Reproduction Update and The Latest from the Show – Me – Select Replacement Heifer Program”, and Dr. Scott Brown, University of Missouri Assistant Research Professor of Agricultural and Applied Economics will be providing the keynote presentation titled “What Opportunities Are There for Cattle Producers in 2017?” “That same evening, agriculture businesses that have supported the event will have booths set up. Attendees can visit and learn how supporter’s products and services can help improve their beef cattle operation,” said Dr. Patrick Davis, MU Cedar County Extension Regional Livestock Specialist. The evening meal will be catered by Jackson Jones of Stockton, Mo.

    Stay Strong, Stay Healthy Advanced (Session 5 of 17)

    Stay Strong, Stay Healthy (SSSH) is an 8-week strength-training program for older adults. SSSH is modeled after the evidenced-based StrongWomen program developed by researchers at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science at Tufts University. While the original Tufts program includes only women, University of Missouri Extension has adapted the curriculum to include men.   Missouri’s Stay Strong, Stay Healthy (SSSH) program is designed to increase aging adults’ access to a safe, structured and effective strength-training program. At each session a prescribed set of 8 upper and lower body strengthening exercises are done. Participants are made to feel comfortable regardless of their current fitness level so they can safely participate and gradually build the strength beneficial to health.

    Building It From The Ground Up Starting the Farm (Session 3 of 9)

    This program is designed to address the needs of land owners looking to improve their property as well as their outputs and profitability over the long run of the operation. Realizing finances may be limited and/or restricted we will be working with those individuals trying to make sound economic decisions about their operations. Targeting both new and old land owners/operators looking to run up to 50-75 breeding cows, 100 stockers, 50-75 breeding goats and/or sheep, or a small registered livestock operation, on farms ranging from 20-160+ acres, operated as a part time and/or hobby farm as well as the full time farmer. This may not be their sole source of income, but a part-time occupation, recreational/retirement farm. It is not only about making a living on the farm, but about living on the farm, raising children on the farm, and having the rural way of life. The farm just needs to pay for itself and if it makes a little money along the way….. Great!
