Stay Strong, Stay Healthy (Session 6 of 10)
When: Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013, 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Where:
Presbyterian Church-Forsyth
Forsyth MO
Description:
In older adults, poor diet and lack of physical activity contribute to declining muscle mass and thinning of the bones. Without adequate muscle mass and bone strength, older adults are more prone to falls and are more likely to develop osteoporosis, which currently affects about 55 percent of people over age 50. In this group, falls are more likely to result in broken bones.
Individuals who don’t suffer a fracture still live with pain and decreased mobility. In addition to pain and suffering, there is a concrete public cost. Osteoporosis related direct medical expenditures exceed $16 billion annually. According to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services in 2006, the average hospital stay for an osteoporosis diagnosis was 4.4 days at an average charge of $22,395. There are no known cures for osteoporosis, so preventive measures like the SSSH program are crucial. Stay Strong, Stay Healthy participants will increase their physical activity, which can lead to many health benefits and a better quality of life.
According to the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, older adults (aged 65 years and older) should do muscle –strengthening activities that involve all the major muscle groups at least two days a week. The SSSH program will help older adults meet this important health recommendation.
SSSH participants are also encouraged to increase their level of aerobic activity. The 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans suggests that older adults do at least 150 minutes (2 hours and 30 minutes) a week of moderate-intensity, or 75 minutes (1 hour and 15 minutes) a week of vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity.
