State 4-H Public Speaking Contest 2013

When:  Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Where:  
Middlebush Hall on the MU Campus - Columbia, MO
Columbia MO

Description:

The 2013 State 4-H Public Speaking Contest will be held Saturday, September 21 at Middlebush Hall on the MU Campus in Columbia. The contest takes place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Youth compete in a communication category of their choice, alongside other Juniors (ages 8-10), Intermediates (ages 11-13) or Seniors (ages 14-18) in their age division.

Registration fee is $25 per competitor. Family and friends who come to support the speakers get in free. All youth must be pre-registered for the contest and a currently enrolled member of Missouri 4-H to compete. more...

Session topic:

Junior (ages 8-10), Intermediate (ages 11-13) and Senior (ages 14-19) contestants compete in one of the following categories:Prepared, Extemporaneous, Tech-Assisted, PSA or Interpretation.

Registration:

To register, please contact the 4-H office in your local MU Extension center, which will be able to provide local deadline and qualification information. The individuals selected by their counties are typically the top finishers at their county 4-H public speaking contest, but each county may have a different selection process.

The number of speakers counties may send is determined by the competition category:
Counties may send up to three speakers per division (Junior, Intermediate and Senior) per category for the Prepared, Extemporaneous, and Technology-Assisted categories. For the Public Service Announcement category, counties may send up to five competitors per division. Counties may send up to five competitors per division for each of the Interpretation sub-categories: Dramatic, Humorous, and Pantomime.

Customer Service is Critical

Description:

Kevin Anderson is a Business Development Specialist for the University of Missouri Extension Center headquartered in Poplar Bluff. He manages the Small Business and Technology Development Center where he provides counseling, training, and resources to aspiring entrepreneurs and small businesses. He is married to Dr. Mairead Ryan-Anderson and they have two sons.

Listen to Kevin as he talks about the dynamics of customer relations, including: why customers quit, what customers expect, and how to handle an irate customer. He believes that good customer service is critical, regardless of whether a business has been around for a century, a decade, or is just opening its doors. It also means treating customers with a friendly, helpful attitude and helping customers efficiently, in a friendly manner.

Description:

Rose Anne Huck has been a graphic designer in the advertising industry since 1979 in the Midwest and on the West Coast. She graduated from the University of Missouri with a Bachelor of Arts in Advertising and Editorial Art. She also earned a teaching certification for art K-12 at Central Missouri State at Warrensburg. She has been married for 20 years to Rev. David Huck, has two daughters, Samantha Klotz and Jessica Patterson, and two grandchildren.

Rose Anne’s session will give you information about how to get the word out about your business, connect with your most ideal clients, customers or patients, and bring them gently to a buying decision.

Description:

Heather Flanigan-Garrett is an eBay power seller who started www.arkansassparechange.com with her then boyfriend and now husband, Brett Garrett, in January of 2007. A former anchor/reporter for KAIT in Jonesboro, AR and associate producer for KFVS in Cape Girardeau, MO, Heather is no stranger to digging for a good story and a bargain buy! She graduated from Missouri State University with a Master of Arts in Communications in 2001. Heather and Brett now reside in Clifton Park, New York with their son, Colt. However, she has local roots. She’s the daughter of Ed and Phyllis Flanigan of Qulin.
