This is a low-impact strength training program for people who are 50 or better. The class meets for 1 hour, twice a week for 8 weeks to complete a series of eight exercises with a warm-up and cool down. SSSH is an effective strength training program designed to increase strength, flexibility and balance in a safe, structured environment. Participants learn exercises to improve their strength, flexibility and balance. Participants are made to feel comfortable regardless of their current fitness level so they can safely participate and gradually build the strength beneficial to health.
We encourage participants to attend 10 or more of the 16 total sessions. It is also encouraged that participants increase their weights as the class progresses to build strength in their muscles.

Stay Strong, Stay Healthy (SSSH) program is designed to increase independent living older adults’ access to a safe, structured, and effective strength training program. Stay Strong, Stay Healthy- Level 2 is a follow-up to Level 1. It is for those who want to challenge themselves a bit more! Over eight weeks, participants learn exercises to improve strength, flexibility and balance. At each session, a prescribed set of eight to 10 upper and lower body strengthening exercises are done along with warm-up and cool-down stretches. In order to enroll in the Stay Strong, Stay Healthy–Level 2 program, you must have completed the Stay Strong, Stay Healthy-Level 1 program at least twice. Participants are made to feel comfortable and are encouraged to gradually build the strength beneficial to health. All equipment is provided.

A Matter of Balance is an 8-week structured group intervention that emphasizes practical strategies to reduce fear of falling and increase activity levels. A Matter of Balance is an award winning program designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase the activity levels of older adults who have concerns about falls. This program is taught by University of Missouri Extension Specialists and consists of eight, two-hour sessions. The sessions help participants learn how to view falls and the fear of falling as something controllable. There will also be information on how to set realistic goals for increasing activity, as well as how to change their environment to reduce fall risk factors. In general the program promotes exercise to increase strength and balance to help reduce the risk of falls in older adults.
