    Description:

The Leopold Conservation Award recognizes extraordinary achievement in voluntary conservation, inspires other landowners through their example, and helps the general public understand the vital role private landowners can and do play in conservation success. In Missouri, the award recipient receives an Aldo Leopold crystal and $10,000.

David Burton with Greene County MU Extension and Donna Barton, public information officer with Greene County, researched materials, got letters of support, and did the required documentation for this award nomination at the request of the Greene County Commission.

The 270-acre RockSpan Farm near Bois D’Arc, owned by brothers Mike and Dan Chiles, is a mix of pasture and forest. The spring-fed Sac River borders the southeast edge of their property. The Sac flows north to Stockton Lake, which is a major source of water for the City of Springfield. This restoration project is good for thousands of citizens along with the trees, birds, fish and many smaller critters that call this wonderful location their home.

In 2015, the Chiles began discussions with their neighbor to lease/purchase his half of the river and about 20 acres adjacent. The damage to this area was significant. Large concentrations of algae was growing along the banks from cow manure. There was 50 years of accumulated trash, barbed wire, fencing and tires that had washed into the river.
