State 4-H Dairy Cattle Judging Contest

When:  Saturday, Aug. 19, 2017, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Description:

The State 4-H Dairy Cattle Judging Contest is open to all youth involved in a dairy cattle project area. Contestants judge six classes and give two sets of oral reasons. The top three individuals in each breed received cash prizes sponsored by the Missouri breed associations. The top ten individuals in each division received rosettes from the Missouri State Fair, and the top three individuals in each division received a plaque from the Missouri State Fair and supporters of the contest.

Quality for Keeps: Home Food Preservation Made Easy

When:  Saturday, Aug. 19, 2017, 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Description:

This 3-in-1 workshop is a crash course in food preservation. In one day, we will cover pressure canning, water bath canning, dehydrating, and freezing produce. Participants will learn methods and recipes that have been tested for both safety and high quality. This class provides the hands-on experience and a thorough guidebook that will allow participants to walk away with not only their own canned items, but also the confidence to preserve food at home. Lunch will be provided!

Regional Gardening Field Day

Description:

Join the University of Missouri Extension for a fun and educational gardening field day from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Aug. 19 at the Botanical Center, 2400 S. Scenic Ave., Springfield, Mo. Field Day presentations will include tips on growing, digging and dividing hostas, a tour of the Springfield Botanical Gardens and butterfly house, tips, and research on growing blackberries and information on native moths and butterflies. There is a cost of $35 per person for the workshop, and that includes lunch. Pre-registration is required to attend this Field Day. University of Missouri Extension Master Gardeners that attend the field day will receive five hours of advanced training.
