    Stay Strong, Stay Healthy - Level 1 (morning) (Session 5 of 16)

    Description:

    Stay Strong, Stay Healthy (SSSH) aims to provide inactive middle-aged and older adults with access to a safe, structured and effective exercise program capable of building muscle and increasing bone density, thus decreasing frailty, osteoporosis and the risk of falls. SSSH helps participants meet the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s physical activity recommendations.

    SSSH challenges participants through incremental increases in exercise volume and intensity. Led by a certified instructor, participants complete a warmup, a prescribed set of upper- and lower-body strengthening exercises and a cool-down at each class. Participants are made to feel comfortable regardless of their current fitness level so they can safely participate and gradually build the strength beneficial to health.

    Chronic Pain Self-Management Program - The Palmer Center (Session 2 of 6)

    When:  Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2019, 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

    Description:

    The Chronic Pain Self-Management Program (CDSMP) is a community-based program which assists participants in maintaining quality of life when faced with chronic Pain. The CPSMP is provided in 2.5 hour sessions once a week for six weeks in community settings (e.g., senior centers, churches, libraries). People with different chronic health problems attend together. Workshops are facilitated by two trained leaders, one or both of whom deal with chronic pain themselves. Classes are highly participative, where mutual support and success build the participants’ confidence in their ability to manage their health and maintain active and fulfilling lives. The program was developed by Stanford University and is funded by the Arthritis Foundation.

    A Matter of Balance - Twin Oaks at Heritage Pointe (Session 2 of 8)

    Description:

    St. James, MO: August 13th, University of Missouri Extension will join Price Chopper to empower 16 low-income residents of St. James with the shopping skills needed to stretch their food dollars and serve healthy, affordable meals to their families. At five grocery stores this summer across the Crawford, Dent and Phelps counties local families will learn to compare unit prices, purchase fruits and vegetables on a budget, read food labels, and pick out whole grains.

    WHO: Nutrition and Health Specialist Rachel Buenemann MS, RD, LD will lead tours for local adults and families. All community members are welcome to enroll by calling 573-458-6260. There is no charge for the tour.

    WHAT: Five grocery stores in Crawford, Dent and Phelps counties are scheduled to participate in Cooking Matters at the Store Day to teach low-income families to shop for healthy food on a tight budget this summer. During the 1.5 hour-tour, participants are empowered with four key food skills, receive a booklet with recipes and shopping tips, a reusable grocery bag and $10 work of healthy groceries.

    WHY: A survey released by Share Our Strength found that 85% of low-income families want to make healthy meals, but only about half are able to do so on a regular basis. Families cited the cost of healthy groceries as their primary obstacle. Cooking Matters at the Store tours provide shoppers with a strategic plan that enables them to stretch their food dollars in a healthy way.
