    In every Missouri County, an MU Extension council, comprised of elected and appointed citizens, guides local educational programming. These play a very critical role in full filling the land grant mission and the mission of MU Extension as they look at the broader need of the region and statewide.

    4-H Robotics Adams Park Girls and Boys Club

    Description:

    Description:
    Two day robot workshop.
    Students will learn how to build a LEGO Mindstorm EV3or NXT robot. Working in groups of two or three, students will program the robot to move in different directions, complete a turn, and maneuver through a maze. Students will learn to program their robots to make a sound and display a message. They will also have an opportunity to complete challenges, such as the Dizzy Drill and Buried Treasure. St. Louis County 4-H will provide the LEGO Mindstorm NXT kits, netbook computers, and other supplies for the course.
    During the last students did robot demonstrations for their parents and peers then received certificates.

    A Matter of Balance (Session 5 of 8)

    Description:

    A Matter of Balance is an award-winning program designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase the activity levels of adults who have concerns about falls. This discussion-based program will provide information on how to set realistic goals for increasing activity, as well as how to change their environment to reduce fall risk factors. The 8 week course helps participants learn to view falls and fear of falling as controllable. If you share these concerns and are interested in improving flexibility, balance and strength, this class is for you. Participant workbook and refreshments included. This program is free but pre-registration is required. A Matter of Balance is a partnership with Oasis and Barnes Jewish Hospital St Peters-Progress West.

    Stay Strong Stay Healthy Level 2 (Session 5 of 18)

    Description:

    Stay Strong, Stay Healthy (SSSH) program is designed to increase independent living older adults’ access to a safe, structured, and effective strength training program. Stay Strong, Stay Healthy- Level 2 is a follow-up to Level 1. It is for those who want to challenge themselves a bit more! Over eight weeks, participants learn exercises to improve strength, flexibility and balance. At each session, a prescribed set of eight to 10 upper and lower body strengthening exercises are done along with warm-up and cool-down stretches. In order to enroll in the Stay Strong, Stay Healthy–Level 2 program, you must have completed the Stay Strong, Stay Healthy-Level 1 program at least twice. Participants are made to feel comfortable and are encouraged to gradually build the strength beneficial to health. All equipment is provided.

    Chronic Disease Self-Management - Mexico (Session 3 of 6)

    Description:

    Chronic Disease Self-management is a six week course. The teaching process makes this program effective. Classes are highly participatory. Mutual support and success builds participants’ confidence in their ability to manage their health and maintain active and fulfilling lives. Participants make weekly action plans, share experiences, and help each other solve problems they encounter in creating and carrying out their self-management program. Physicians and other health professionals both at Stanford and in the community have reviewed all materials in the workshop. Subjects covered are: •Techniques to deal with problems such as frustration, fatigue, pain and isolation. • Appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength, flexibility, and endurance • Appropriate use of medications • Communicating effectively with family, friends, and health professionals • Nutrition • Decision making • How to evaluate new treatments The class meets once a week for two hours for a total of six weeks.

    Description:

    SSSH is modeled after the evidenced-based StrongWomen program developed by researchers at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science at Tufts University. While the original Tufts program includes only women, University of Missouri Extension has adapted the curriculum to include men. Missouri’s Stay Strong, Stay Healthy (SSSH) program is designed to increase aging adults’ access to a safe, structured, and effective strength training program. Over the 10 weeks, participants learn exercises to improve their strength, flexibility and balance. At each session, a prescribed set of 8 upper and lower body strengthening exercises are done along with warm-up and cool-down stretches. Participants are made to feel comfortable regardless of their current fitness level so they can safely participate and gradually build the strength beneficial to health.
