    Mid-America Grassland Evaluation Contest

    2019 Missouri Master Gardener State Conference

    Description:

    ‘Making Connections’ was the theme of this year’s University of Missouri Extension’s Missouri Master Gardener State Conference. Master Gardeners attendees from around the state had the opportunity to connect with Mizzou, Horticulture Specialists from around the state, and other Master Gardeners at this educational experience in Columbia, Missouri. Our keynote speaker was Dr. Quinn Long from the Missouri Botanical Garden and Shaw Nature Reserve. Fruits, vegetables, landscaping, ornamentals, Master Pollinator and other interesting classes were offered. Campus tours were included in the areas of architecture, history, Mizzou Botanic Gardens and greenhouse and Sanborn Field for an insider’s view of the University of Missouri campus. Tuesday evening, attendees had the opportunity to enjoy dinner with a Horticulture Specialist at classic Columbia restaurants, or dinner on your own and join an evening tour with Dr. David Trinklein at Shelter Gardens. Wednesday afternoon tours included South Farm and Jefferson Farm.

    Stay Strong, Stay Healthy (SSSH) aims to provide inactive middle-aged and older adults with access to a safe, structured and effective exercise program capable of building muscle and increasing bone density, thus decreasing frailty, osteoporosis and the risk of falls. SSSH helps participants meet the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s physical activity recommendations.

    SSSH challenges participants through incremental increases in exercise volume and intensity. Led by a certified instructor, participants complete a warmup, a prescribed set of upper- and lower-body strengthening exercises and a cool-down at each class. Participants are made to feel comfortable regardless of their current fitness level so they can safely participate and gradually build the strength beneficial to health.

    The quality of your pastures were greatly damage during ,as well as after, the drought of 2018. Weed competition due to overgrazing conditions, thin ground cover, and hoof damaged pastures will become a reality this summer if precautions are not taken to curtail this from happening. Now is the time to get a plan of action in place to control and improve what is going on out in your grazing system. This targeted program teaches producers how to improve forage production economic return while protecting our environment. The program inspires increased economic development and social viability in rural Missouri as it applies to our grazing operations.
