    Master Gardener - Perry County Master Gardener Training Spring 2019 (Session 4 of 12)

    Description:

    The University of Missouri Extension’s Master Gardener program is an opportunity for people of all ages to receive in-depth horticulture training and then apply what they have learned to improve lives in their communities and educate others about gardening. Training includes 30 hours of instruction by horticulture instructors as well as many guides and handouts:
    Topics include plant growth and development, soils and fertility, vegetable gardening, home fruit production, insect and disease control, annual and perennial flowers, basic landscaping concepts, and lawncare and weeds.
    After completing Master Gardener training, Master Gardeners volunteer 30 hours to educate others on gardening topics and research–based horticulture information. Volunteer activities may include work in clinics in the community, helping local residents diagnose plant and insect problems write articles for newsletters and newspapers, exhibits at home and garden shows and fairs, organize community gardening projects, develop youth gardening programs, teach gardening classes, conduct home horticulture research, and assist in senior gardening programs

    The registration fee for Master Gardener training is $165. The registration fee includes a state program fee, core manual book, nametag and training supplies. Deadline for registration is April 23, 2019. A minimum of 10 participants is required to hold the class. If this minimum is not met, refunds will be issued.

    Stay Strong, Stay Healthy - Level 1 in Harrisonville (Session 8 of 17)

    Stay Strong, Stay Healthy (SSSH) program is designed to increase independent living older adults access to a safe, structured, and effective strength-training program. Over eight weeks, participants learn exercises to improve strength, flexibility and balance. At each class, a prescribed set of eight upper and lower body strengthening exercises are done along with warm-up and cool-down stretches. Participants are made to feel comfortable regardless of their current fitness level so they can safely participate and gradually build the strength beneficial to health.

    Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions (Session 1 of 6)

    Description:

    The program is for individuals with any chronic condition, and their family and caregivers. Chronic conditions include arthritis, asthma, depression, diabetes or pre-diabetes, fibromyalgia, heart disease, lupus, and osteoporosis, among others. Participants learn strategies for managing chronic conditions. Topics include eating well and exercise, relaxation and handling difficult emotions, problem-solving to address barriers, communicating with healthcare professionals, managing medications and symptoms, and setting realistic goals. Registration includes the book, Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions, and a relaxation CD.

    Nutrition & Health Locally Invited Programs- Preferred Family Healthcare Health Fair

    Preferred Family Healthcare requested that MU nutrition and Health have a booth at their health fair. Kelsa Ferguson and Myra Dickensheet worked together to set up a booth on healthy snacking. We talked with employees on ways that they can snack healthy during the work day. We also gave out flyers on upcoming Extension Nutrition and Health events and programs. Around 43 people came through the health fair.

    Parents are forever. Although parents can divorce each other, their children are not divorceable. Each parent is responsible for nurturing and creating their children's sense of security and well-being — even through the divorce process. Focus on Kids was designed to help you with that task.



    What will I gain?



    After attending Focus On Kids, which is only two and one-half hours long, you will:



    ? Understand the importance of ongoing, supportive and nurturing involvement by both parents.



    ? Receive information on both children’s and adolescents’ developmental needs, abilities and common reactions to divorce.



    ? Learn specific behaviors that help in a coparenting situation and those that should be avoided.

    Pre-registration is required for each parent.



    A $25 per-person fee, payable by cash or check to Buchanan County Extension, can be paid in advance, or immediately prior to the start of class.
