Starting and Managing a Business

Relatives As Parents--Northland Grandfamilies (Session 18 of 23)

Description:

The Northland Grandfamilies program serves grandparents in Clay and Platte Counties who are raising their grandchildren. The program also serves aunts/uncles and other relatives who are raising children under the age of 18. The program seeks to raise awareness of the issues facing grandparents/aunts/uncles who are filling the parenting role. Advocacy, education and referral services are important aspects of the program. Support group meetings are scheduled twice a month, with guest speakers on topics of interest. The program is made possible by a partnership of the Clay County Extension Council, the Platte County Senior Fund and Clay County Senior Services.

Session topic:

The daytime support group meeting this month will feature Kara Burgess, Elder Law and Special Needs Attorney. Her topic is: "Estate Planning and Other Legal Decision Facing Seniors".

Any grandparent who is raising grandchildren age 18 or younger is welcome to participate in Northland Grandfamilies. The program is also open to aunts/uncles and other adult relatives who are raising children. The program is free of charge. Chronic Disease Self-Management -- Springfield (Session 5 of 6)

Description:

The Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (CDSMP) is a community-based program which assists participants in maintaining quality of life when faced with chronic medical conditions. The CDSMP is provided in two and a half hour sessions, once a week for six weeks, in community settings (e.g. senior centers, churches, libraries). People with different chronic health problems attend together. Workshops are facilitated by two trained leaders, one or both of whom deal with chronic diseases themselves. Subjects covered include: 1) techniques to deal with problems such as frustration, fatigue, pain and isolation, 2) appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength, flexibility, and endurance, 3) appropriate use of medications, 4) communicating effectively with family, friends, and health professionals, 5) nutrition, and 6) how to evaluate new treatments. Classes are highly participative, where mutual support and success build the participants' confidence in their ability to manage their health and maintain active and fulfilling lives.
