The Master Gardener program provides in depth horticultural training to individuals throughout Missouri who then volunteer their time applying what they have learned to help others in their communities to learn about gardening and environmental education. To become trained as a Master Gardener, an individual must attend a 30 hour classroom Core Course training. Then the Master Gardener trainee is required to give 30 hours of volunteer service back to their community in approved University of Missouri Extension activities.

Diabetes Self-Management Program - Hannibal (Session 5 of 6)

Description:

This course is designed to help people who have diabetes or individuals who care for someone who has diabetes to become better self-managers of their condition. This program will consist of six sessions each lasting 2 to 2 1/2 hours. Participants will learn to plan healthful meals with balanced carbohydrates, learn more about the benefits of physical activity, discuss blood sugar highs and lows, and how to communicate more effectively with health professionals. Participants will receive a free book.

In this fifth session, participants learn more ways to break the symptom cycle wheel and discuss medication options for diabetes.

Stay Strong, Stay Healthy-Waynesville (Session 7 of 16)

A strength training program for middle-aged and older adults. The programs goal is to improve health and quality of life. Exercise sessions to improve strength and balance include warm-up exercises, strengthening exercises and cool-down stretches.

Cooking Matters is a program provided by Share Our Strength, a nationwide initiative to end hunger in America. Each week participants get to take home the ingredients from one of the recipes made in class. A lot of basic cooking skills are covered in this program. The Stay Strong, Stay Healthy Program is an evidence-based strength training program designed to meet the fitness needs of older adults and middle age sedentary adults. It is an eight-week program, where participants are guided through a strength training routine two times per week. The event will be held in the Kempton Room at the Fred E. Davis Multi-Purpose Center at State Fair Community College in Sedalia, MO. Class will be from 9:15-10:15 a.m.

A Matter of Balance (Session 2 of 8)

A Matter of Balance is an award winning program designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase the activity levels of older adults who have concerns about falls. This program is taught by University of Missouri Extension Specialists and consists of eight, two-hour sessions. The sessions help participants learn how to view falls and the fear of falling as something controllable. There will also be information on how to set realistic goals for increasing activity, as well as how to change their environment to reduce fall risk factors. In general the program promotes exercise to increase strength and balance to help reduce the risk of falls in older adults.

Stay Strong, Stay Healthy- Level 2 University of Missouri Medical School (Session 3 of 16)

Description:

Missouri’s Stay Strong, Stay Healthy (SSSH) program is designed to increase aging adults’ access to a safe, structured, and effective strength training program. Stay Strong, Stay Healthy- Level 2 is a follow-up to Level 1. It is for those who want to challenge themselves a bit more! Over the 8 weeks, participants learn exercises to improve their strength, flexibility and balance. At each session, a prescribed set of eight to 10 upper and lower body strengthening exercises are done along with warm-up and cool-down stretches. In order to enroll in the Stay Strong, Stay Healthy–Level 2 program, you must have completed the Stay Strong, Stay Healthy-Level 1 program at least twice. Participants are made to feel comfortable and encouraged to gradually build the strength beneficial to health. All equipment is provided.

Cooking Matters at the Store Tour Buffalo 4 17

Cooking Matters at the Store tour provides a hands-on approach to stretch your budget and eat great-tasting, healthy foods every day of the week. We will look at each section of the store including: produce, dairy, cereal, breads, canned, frozen, and meat, fish, and poultry. Participants will learn to compare unit pricing, and practice reading food labels. We will be interactive, so questions are encouraged. At the end, we will do the $10 challenge. Participants will receive a $10 store gift card to buy a meal for four people using a minimum of three food groups.
