2018 Grow Your Farm (Session 2 of 10)

Grow Your Farm is designed for prospective farmers, beginners with some experience and seasoned farmers who want to make a "new beginning" with alternative farming methods. MU Extension specialists and experienced, innovative farmers teach the sessions. Participants attend a set of practical seminars and field days to learn from MU Extension specialists, farmers and agribusiness operators.This course will help you: Identify and prioritize personal and family values and use them as the foundation for the farm mission statement and goals. Learn how to "walk the farm" to assess the land and its facilities. Learn to evaluate the feasibility of particular farm opportunities. Understand the components of a business plan and create one of your own. Understand financial aspects of a business plan and review popular tools to manage financial records. Consider different types of agricultural marketing and draft a marketing plan. Become familiar with a variety of legal issues that pertain to farming enterprises. Network with other farmers.

Beginning Farmers "Building It from the Ground Up Program" (Bolivar, MO) (Session 7 of 9)

Description:

This program is designed to address the needs of land owners looking to improve their property as well as their outputs and profitability over the long run of the operation. Realizing finances may be limited and/or restricted we will be working with those individuals trying to make sound economic decisions about their operations. Targeting both new and old land owners/operators looking to run up to 30-75 breeding cows, 100 stockers, 50-75 breeding goats and/or sheep, or a small registered livestock operation, on farms ranging from 20-160+ acres, operated as a part time and/or hobby farm as well as the full time farmer. This may not be their sole source of income, but a part-time occupation, recreational/retirement farm. It is not only about making a living on the farm, but about living on the farm, raising children on the farm, and having the rural way of life. The farm just needs to pay for itself and if it makes a little money along the way….. Great! Each program will consist of two or three segments, running approximately 45-90 minutes, with a break in between allowing for questions and refreshments. You may attend only the evenings you want or sign up to attend the entire program. The choice is yours.

Each year, with the help of our local Master Gardeners (Hickory County) and FFA Chapters (Wheatland, Hermitage, Mack Creek, Weableau, and Skyline), we go into the elementary schools and offer an opportunity for hands on learning as each 1st grader plants a variety of gardening seeds to be grown in the spring. The local FFA chapter care for the seeds for about 4-5 weeks and then we send them home with the students to plant in their own gardens. Hopefully they will get to eat what they have planted. We also send home information about container grown gardening in the hope the parents can put together something the students can use so they can care for the plants.

Cedar County Master Gardeners Training (Session 1 of 10)

Description:

Opportunities to gain and share horticultural knowledge is available through University of Missouri Extension’s Master Gardener program in Cedar County. The Master Gardener Program is an intensive horticulture course offered statewide by University of Missouri Extension. The 30 hours of classroom training provided by area horticulture and agricultural specialists set Master Gardeners apart from other home gardeners and programs. A total of 10 three-hour sessions taught by trained professionals will cover horticulture principles and practices. Course topics are: •Woody Ornamentals & Trees •Irrigation, Hobby Greenhouses & Tool Care •Plant Growth & Development •Plant Diseases •Soils & Composting •Entomology •Vegetable Gardening •Flower Gardening •Growing Fruit Crops •Turfgrass Master Gardeners are volunteers who assist with horticulture education in the community. Thirty volunteer hours from participants are required the first year after training. Following that, 20 volunteer service hours are required each year to remain an active Master Gardener. Volunteer service hours are usually acquired by serving in a county master gardeners organization. Activities might include serving as an advisor for a community garden, or helping to maintain a demonstration garden.

Stock Healthy, Shop Healthy is a comprehensive, community-based program that allows communities to improve access to healthy, affordable foods by working with a small food retailer. Millions of Americans have limited access to a supermarket, which means they must rely on fast-food restaurants, gas stations and corner stores to feed themselves and their families. People who have better access to supermarkets are more likely to eat more fruits and vegetables and less likely to be overweight or obese. Diabetes Self-Management at McCarty Senior Center, Wheatland (Session 2 of 6)

Description:

The Diabetes Self-Management program (DSMP) is a community-based program that assists participants in managing type 2 diabetes. DSMP is provided in 2.5 hour sessions once a week for six weeks in community settings (e.g. churches, community centers, libraries and hospitals). The weekly sessions are facilitated by two trained leaders, one or both of whom deal with diabetes themselves. Subjects covered include: 1) techniques to deal with the symptoms of diabetes, fatigue, pain, hyper/hypoglycemia, stress and emotional problems such as depression, anger, fear and frustration; 2) appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength and endurance; 3) healthy eating 4) appropriate use of medication; and 5) working more effectively with health care providers. Participants make weekly action plans, share experiences and help each other solve problems they encounter in creating and carrying out their self-management program.
