Chronic Disease Self-Management -- Springfield (Session 3 of 6)

Description:

The Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (CDSMP) is a community-based program which assists participants in maintaining quality of life when faced with chronic medical conditions. The CDSMP is provided in two and a half hour sessions, once a week for six weeks, in community settings (e.g. senior centers, churches, libraries). People with different chronic health problems attend together. Workshops are facilitated by two trained leaders, one or both of whom deal with chronic diseases themselves. Subjects covered include: 1) techniques to deal with problems such as frustration, fatigue, pain and isolation, 2) appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength, flexibility, and endurance, 3) appropriate use of medications, 4) communicating effectively with family, friends, and health professionals, 5) nutrition, and 6) how to evaluate new treatments. Classes are highly participative, where mutual support and success build the participants' confidence in their ability to manage their health and maintain active and fulfilling lives.

Stay Strong, Stay Healthy (Session 8 of 10)

Description:

SSSH is modeled after the evidenced-based StrongWomen program developed by researchers at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science at Tufts University. While the original Tufts program includes only women, University of Missouri Extension has adapted the curriculum to include men.

Missouri’s Stay Strong, Stay Healthy (SSSH) program is designed to increase aging adults’ access to a safe, structured, and effective strength training program. Over the 10 weeks, participants learn exercises to improve their strength, flexibility and balance. At each session, a prescribed set of 8 upper and lower body strengthening exercises are done along with warm-up and cool-down stretches. Participants are made to feel comfortable regardless of their current fitness level so they can safely participate and gradually build the strength beneficial to health.

Fruit Tree Grafting Workshop

Join grafting experts Patrick Byers (MU Extension) and John Avery (MSU State Fruit Experiment Station) for a hands-on demonstration of fruit tree grafting techniques. Participants are encouraged to bring apple scionwood from a favorite tree, as well as a sharp grafting tool. We will provide apple rootstocks, and participants will perform whip/tongue grafting and take home two apple trees.

Low Cost Home Energy Savings Tips and Tools Workshop

Has the cost of heating your home this winter put a crimp in your budget? Do the utility bills seem to constantly spiral upwards? Would you like to reduce your monthly utility bills? If you answered yes to any of these questions you should make plans to attend the Low Cost Home Energy Savings Tips and Tools Workshop.
The workshop is designed to feature low cost practices that can have a large impact on the home energy bill but are still simple enough that most homeowners can implement them on their own.
This workshop will demonstrate how to use a home energy checklist to evaluate that steps you should take first and what has the potential for the greatest and fastest payback. Weatherization of your home to keep the cold/hot outside air from coming into your home will also be a focus. Different types of weather-stripping and caulking materials will be discussed as well as some hands on exercises to show how to choose and install the proper material for each situation. Insulation is an important item for your home and what the recommended levels and the different types of insulation that can be used will be covered. The session will also include information on the ENERGY STAR program and a series of five-minute energy saving tips.

Know what you are getting into before you buy that rabbit this spring. Farm stores and individuals are starting to sell rabbits just in time for Easter. Although small and cute, they are much different than a dog or cat in how they behave and what they require. Whether you’ve already purchased a rabbit or are still thinking about it, there is a lot to learn. University of Missouri Extension will be offering a program on March 26 in Maryville to help educate new and potential rabbit owners. “Rabbit 101” will cover how to select a rabbit, supplies needed, basic care, what to expect, and opportunities.
