Sensory Garden Symposium

Description:

Learn more about the plans for Springfield Botanical Garden’s next step for bringing nature, gardens and people together at this event. The symposium is designed especially for educators, accessibility advocates, inclusion specialists and anyone interested in the planned sensory garden for the five senses. Symposium topics and speakers include “Memory Care with Alzheimer patients Using Plants” by Kelly McGowan, horticulture educator with University of Missouri Extension. The program “Adaptive Gardening and Disability Sensitivity” will be presented by Amanda Primm, access and technology specialist, Southwest Council for Independent Living. “Differentiated Learning Styles in the Garden,” will be presented by Becky Day, interpretive horticulturist at the Botanical Center. Keith will present “Envisioning our Sensory Garden in Springfield.”

Mental Health First Aid for Adults - Chillicothe, MO

Mental Health First Aid for Adults introduces participants to risk factors and warning signs of mental health programs and reviews common treatments. The program has demonstrated effectiveness in improving trainees' knowledge of mental disorders, reducing the stigma associated with mental illness and increasing the amount of help provided to others.

Cooking Matters At the Store-Waynesville

When:  Friday, March 23, 2018, 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Description:

Cooking Matters at the Store is a free, guided grocery store tour that teaches low-income adults how to get the most nutrition for their food dollars. During the tour, participants practice key food shopping skills, such as buying fruits and vegetables on a budget, comparing unit prices, reading food labels, and identifying whole grain foods. Cooking Matters at the Store is designed to help adults maximize their SNAP benefits and WIC vouchers by learning how to make healthy and affordable choices at the supermarket. Tours are led by trained Tour Facilitators, often in collaboration with a community partner that serves low-income families and helps the facilitator recruit participants.

Farm to School of the Ozarks Garden Teacher Training

This training is offered for Teachers from Hollister School District and Springfield Catholic Schools to support the Farm to School of the Ozarks Program. Teachers will learn skills to teach garden curriculum and to engage students in outdoor garden classrooms. Teachers will also learn other ways to connect kids with their food.

Hickory County Annual Agricultural Conference

Description:

Planning has begun for our Annual Hickory County Agriculture Conference to be held on Friday, March 23rd, at the McCarty Senior Center in Wheatland. The purpose of this conference is to address current agricultural issues producers and growers are facing in their day-to-day operation-- from weed control and pasture renovation to livestock updates as well as legislative issues. We present a variety of topics from year to year in an effort to educate and provide solutions to our clientele so their operational needs may be met. This years topic will address heifer development programs and their nutritional needs. Our Speaker will be Dr. N.T. Cosby from Purina Farm the senior cattle consultant and nutritionist.
