2014 Ray County Soils and Crops Conference

Description:

The 2014 Soils and Crops Conference will give area producers the opportunity to hear up-to-date information and ideas from University of Missouri specialists; allowing them to make pivotal management decisions from research-based data. For this year’s conference, State Extension Specialist with the University of Missouri will make presentations and answer questions on the following topics: Weed Management Update for 2014 and Beyond, Soybean Cyst Nematode and Corn and Soybean Disease Update, Weather Tools for Agriculture, In-Season Nitrogen Management, and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles – The Next High-Tech Tool for Agriculture. An update from the Missouri Soybean Association and Merchandising council will conclude the meeting. Continuing education units (CEUs) for Certified Crop Advisors will be offered. The Soils and Crops Conference is open to the public and will be held at the Ray County Veterans Memorial Community Building (312 Clark St., Richmond, MO). Lunch will be provided. The cost to attend the seminar is $10 per person (due at the door), and registration must be received by February 5th to assure adequate food. The training is free, however attendees are required to have a Pesticide Core Manual. If you already have a manual, please bring it to the training. If you do not have a Core Manual, they will be available for purchase for $12 at the time of the meeting. Information will also be offered concerning Water Quality Improvement Through the Proper Use of Pesticicdes.

Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training

Description:

A Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training will be held in February that is open to all interested adults and teens. Through this program you'll learn about emergency preparedness and basic disaster response skills, such as how to operate a fire extinguisher, light search and rescue, emergency medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help.

Low Cost, No Cost Energy Savers (Session 11 of 12)

Low Cost, No Cost Energy Savers helps participants identify home weatherization issues and wasteful home energy consumption, while offering inexpensive solutions that they can pursue immediately. Emphasis is placed on determining the aspects that the can have the greatest impact for the least investment and effort. Participants that make these 'do-it-yourself' improvements and adopt the suggested energy saving techniques can save from $20 to $50 per month on their utility bills.

This is a Life Skills program offering for OACAC clients. In this session, MU Extension handouts, presentation and demonstrations are combined with two video segments from the film "Kilowatt Ours" to teach weatherization and home energy conservation.

Building Strong Families (Session 4 of 10)

The Building Strong Families program is taught year-round in partnership with Hillcrest Ministries, a faith-based social service agency and transitional housing program serving homeless families in the greater Kansas City area. When accepted into the Hillcrest program, adults agree to participate in an intensive 90-day program that emphasizes life-skills and financial solvency. Several modules from the Building Strong Families curriculum are utilized in the life-skills education component.

Private Pesticide Applicator Certification is required to purchase restricted use pesticides. Attend this training to obtain or renew Private Pesticide Applicator Certification. This training session will also address pesticides and water quality. Farms not already in possession of the Missouri Private Pesticide Applicator Training Manual must purchase one at the training to receive certification.
